I'm so thankful to Erica Arvold and her team for releasing great content on YouTube for us actors.
I'll also be forever grateful to Arvold for helping me get my first ever SAG-AFTRA voucher.

In this post, I've selected five quick auditions tips from Arvold that made me think a little differently about my auditions.
1. SLATING HEIGHT
Slating height is fairly standard these days, but I always thought it was to compare us to the talent already cast. While that may still be part of the reason, I appreciated Erica's insight on the topic.
2. TELEPHONE PROP TIP
It's especially hard not to use props when you have a theatre background like me. The only prop I typically use is a phone because a "hand phone" seems too distracting to me. However, Erica gives great advice that I didn't realize would translate on camera. I'm so thankful for this easy to implement tip that I will definitely start using.
3. WARDROBE COLORS
I'm a big fan of color branding and life uniforms. However, I do have a few extra pieces in my closet that stray from my everyday blue tee. I haven't, however, thought about the power of color to depict certain types of characters.
4. VARIOUS TAKES
Should an actor give a subtly different take or a drastically different take? A tried and true strategies rehearsal exercise is great for what Erica says she likes to see.
5. LETTING IT GO
My acting coach is great about asking us to do this, but how to do it is hard to comprehend for those of us that like to plan. I've been coached to think about it as "washing away my rehearsals." Check out this video for another cool visual to help you grasp the concept.
So which of these tips did you like the most? Comment to let me know.
