I love teaching actors how to grow their Actor Savvy.
Actor Savvy is your ability to be a professional, likable actor.
I suggest that you subscribe to Backstage's newsletter if you haven't already. I've learned a lot from them, and I even got booked in an indie with known actors via their submission platform.
I've gathered five quick videos from Backstage in this post that will grow your Actor Savvy ASAP.
Watch the videos below to see if you need to make a few tweaks this week because running your acting business is about more than just having talent.
1. KEEP AGENT CONVOS SHORT & SWEET
I hear from a lot of actors that can't get a response from their agent. My agent has no problem responding to me when I have questions, however, because it's rare that I send them much more than an audition confirmation or book out dates. If you're constantly bombarding your agent with questions or feel like they're not responding, then watch this video.
2. CAMERAS SEE EVERYTHING
My biggest learning curve as an actor has been transitioning from theatre to film. I have amazing acting coaches that have taught me the importance of being still on camera because it will pick up every little nuance, whereas my theatre training made me feel like I needed to reach the back row. Watch this video to hear more of this on-camera tip straight from a casting director.
3. BE YOURSELF
Oh that dreaded slate. I've heard actors deliver a monologue during their slates, but I suggest getting straight to the needed info with no chit chat. Watch the video below to hear about a slate mistake I've never heard of before.
4. FIND DEMO MUSIC
The "reel" deal (see what I did there?) is that most casting directors prefer clips nowadays, which I've heard twice now directly from my agent. Your agent will also appreciate having standalone demo clips in your casting profiles so they can decide what to submit on your behalf based on a role's description. However, if you do need a full demo reel, then I suggest having a music clip that represents you well. Watch this video to find out where to appropriately place that audio file.
5. GROOM YOUR SOCIAL MEDIA
This is one of my favorite Backstage videos because it supports what I teach my Actor Boss Academy actors. People are looking for you online! Watch this video to see what this casting director says about his online searches.
Which of these tips do you need to work on this week? Comment to let me know.
