There are a number of things we can't control as actors, like whether or not our look complements someone already cast.
However, there is one aspect of our careers that we can and should take charge of: growing our fanbase.
Actors have crazy marketing power if they utilize and grow their audience correctly.
That's what I'm teaching actors how to do in my new free membership area, Actor Boss Academy.
You'll learn to GROW A LOYAL FANBASE to LEVERAGE CASTING even WITHOUT TV/FILM CREDITS.
Yup. You read that last part right.
There's a better way than trying to get a million likes on social media, which is actually the wrong way to do it.
GROW A LOYAL FANBASE
With the creation and evolution of social media, we have seen the rise of social media stars, some of which have gotten gigs in movies or television, or even had entire shows written for them.
Do you know why?
These social media stars proved they have loyal fans and put in the work to build that fanbase.
I disagree that social is the best way to do this, though.
For longterm success, you'll need to move your audience interaction off of social media.
The new trend in social is engagement, meaning your future fans will want a means of interacting with you that feels a bit more personal.
Can you engage on social media?
Do you have ultimate control over your social media accounts?
Understanding why you can't build your audience on social media--and where to send them instead--is crucial to your marketing success.
I talk about this more inside of my free membership area, Actor Boss Academy.
Now let's dig into the reason you need to correctly build your audience.
Having a loyal fanbase gives you an edge when you're marketing yourself as an actor.
Everyone is ultimately in this business for one purpose: to make money.
The amount of time and money it takes for us to produce projects requires us to make money from those same projects so that we can keep creating new projects!
So at the end of the day, actors are expected to "open."
That means we need to put butts in seats, sell tickets, get people to subscribe monthly, or make a purchase aka make the production money.
Yes we should work on our craft. Yes we need talent if we want a lasting career. Yes there still needs to be something the casting and production teams like about us.
But we also need people who are willing to pay money to see us, and people only buy from people they know, like, and trust.
This is why major athletes with no acting background can hop into a movie at the drop of the dime. They already have millions of fans willing to pay money to see them.
(However, they're typically relying on social media and marketing teams to build their fanbase like most celebrities, which is not a solid foundation for audience retention.)
I want us to quickly consider this word "leverage."
Leverage is not manipulation or blackmail; it's simply sharing with casting that you have a growing loyal fanbase that's willing to purchase from you, which allows you to offer something more than just acting and participate in the success of the project from a marketing and sales perspective.
It's more so that you're leveraging your audience with casting.
No one is an island in this business. Your success is their success, and their success is your success.
NO TV/FILM CREDITS NEEDED
If you have very few or no tv/film credits, then you're not famous enough for anyone to care about behind the scenes info like what you ate for breakfast.
You won't grow your audience by asking people to "stay in the loop" on your acting gigs because most bookings aren't frequent enough to keep their attention, even for famous actors.
Instead, you must do at least one of three things:
There is something unique that you can offer your audience to make them keep coming back for more, and it's not your acting.
Notice that the list above makes it about them, not you. That's key.
There are people out there that "get you." You just need to find them.
Don't assume they'll find you. Be proactive.
At some point word-of-mouth kicks in, too.
So how in the world do you attract loyal fans? What should you offer them, if not your acting?
